Last night the Mayor faced a tough audience out at the Ryan Road School in Ward 6. It was his seventh forum about his proposed Override, and the temperature was definitely chilly. The audience peppered him with questions and challenges and broke into applause for audience members they agreed with. A woman tore into the city planning to acquire the golf course and build two homes on it. The Mayor defended the purchase, arguing that it would increase our tax base when the new homes came on line.
The Mayor, a friend commented, seems to enjoy and thrive on challenges to his governance. He finally brought the meeting to a close at 9:30pm. This was the latest that one of these meetings has ever gone. One of the last people to comment was a man in his thirties who seemed resigned to being steamrollered. I think he said the following, my apologies if I misquoted him.
“You’re driving all of us out of town.” he said sadly. “Sure we’ll have great schools and a beautiful downtown, but its going to be someone else’s town, someone else’s schools, some one else’s golf course. We’ll be gone, we’ll be living somewhere else.”
