I haven’t seen the Hatfield Street roundabout project discussed in the proceedings of the city council. Ditto for any other official venue. One has to think all this silence is buying the Mayor and the DOT time they can use to establish the groundwork for going ahead with the roundabout. Down in Boston there are probably quiet kinds of pressure plays and horse-trading taking place to get Native American advocates to get out of the way. It’s tough to fight a project when the DOT has drawn up plans and money has been put in their budget . But maybe the people of Northampton should have a voice in whatever plans are going to be approved.
We have all these artifacts that indicate the presence of an ancient village. We also have thousands of people signing a petition against the DOT project. This is something important that should have been on the agenda of the city council and the historical commission long ago. The fix is simple: changing the geometrics of the intersection and putting in a traffic light. Somehow this has become a big deal. Yes, it would have been lovely to have roundabouts at all the major gateway intersections to Northampton, but this roundabout will obliterate an important piece of history.
